New Album by TogoRhino
Tales of Bobbi Niger
TogoRhino’s Tales of Bobbi Niger Breaks Musical Boundaries, Offering an Immersive Exploration of Trance Blues and More It’s refreshing to hear an album and, upon first listen, get an immediate sense that it is genuine and worthy of your time and attention.
TogoRhino’s Tales of Bobbi Niger is just such an album. Its 12 songs draw upon west African desert blues, Mississippi hill country blues, gospel and American funk and R&B. One label that might fit is “trance blues,” but in many respects this album defies categorization. It is hypnotic and captivating, indeed, but is also dynamic, eclectic and just plain funky… old school, sho’nuff funky.
TogoRhino came into being about two years ago when singer/guitarist Alain Apaloo invited singer/harmonica player Peter Nande, singer/percussionist Sal Dibba and guitarist Olav Poulsen for a jam at the club Mojo in Copenhagen. Apaloo had a vision of combining west African music with contemporary blues and roots music. That first jam told them all they needed to know, and TogoRhino was born.
TogoRhino’s music is characterized by compelling rhythms and a funky groove that swings… intense, yet soothing, often leaving audiences in a spellbound, meditative state. The four seasoned musicians take their time, bringing a playful and experimental spirit to their performances, delivering blues with raw energy and a feel-good attitude.
Tales of Bobbi Niger includes seven original songs, all of which are the products of jams in the studio. These, in addition to five cover songs, bear evidence of a genuine musical communion. That’s a precious experience for any musician. It’s also a gift
